Flannery O’Connor was born in 1925 and died at the young age of 39. She was born, and died in, Georgia. Most of her stories are set in the South and involve individuals’ relationships with God. She was raised Roman Catholic and passed away from a decade long battle with lupus. One can quickly pick up on her grim outlook on life and humanity while reading through her works.
Here are a few questions for discussion after you read:
After reading the first couple of sentences, what is your original gut feeling about this story?
Do you think Mrs. Connin really wanted to help Harry or was she just swept up in the sensationalism of the river preaching?
Do you think Mr. Paradise had good intentions when he followed Harry to the river? Does Mr. Paradise represent a deeper meaning in the story or was he simply another odd character?
What did you think of Harry’s naivety in taking the preacher’s words so literally?

We’re reading chapters 3-4 this week. I like Voddie’s application at the end of chapter 2, assessing your priorities with your family and making sure you are not holding idols. I have loved reading your insights and responses to the book, as well!

I finished today! Wow, what a truly beautiful book. Alcott tied it up in such a lovely bow and I know I will reread this many times in my life.

How did everyone like the book?! I am still a few chapters away from finishing the book, so I’ll post my final thoughts when I finish up.
I love when Marmee is giving Meg advice on how to balance being mom and wife and she says “For you are the sunshine-maker of the family, and if you get dismal there is no fair weather”. Now I need a shirt that says “Sunshine Maker” 😂😍

Me too! I’m on chapter 43 and I am loving the end of the book way more than I thought I would!

I’m on chapter 36 and I don’t want to finish. I’m so mad at Jo for breaking Laurie’s heart and I just don’t care what happens from here 😂

I’m glad I’m not the only one who isn’t crazy about Jo. I’m with you, every time she talks I roll my eyes 😂 And the fact that she runs away from Laurie and ultimately says no to him… oy vey.
